Culinary Highlights: 2024 Edition

2024 for me felt very much like a year of finding new rhythms after I went back to work after my maternity leave in late 2023. So much about two working parents raising two young kids is scheduling, especially when trying to make time for things outside of work and children’s activities.

While I didn’t do as much reporting this year as I would have liked, I am committed to telling stories of the people behind our city’s independent establishments. Thanks for following along!

Here are some of my favourite food-related memories of 2024:

We travelled for family this year, with a trip to San Jose to visit my sister Felicia and her husband in March. We had some great Vietnamese food in that community (I can never go too long without a bowl of pho, haha). We also stayed in San Francisco for a few nights before returning home, and loved staying in and exploring a less touristy part of the city.

We also returned to Toronto for the first time since the pandemic to visit my sister Amanda and her husband over the summer. It’s no secret I love that city and all it has to offer. I ended up having one of the best burgers I’ve had in some time from Burger Drops.

Even after the pandemic, staycations have and will remain a part of our repertoire. There’s nothing like a reset for me with a visit to Prairie Creek Inn. And while their breakfasts are always wonderful, its the people we enjoy it with that matters.

Mack and I also commemorated our ten year wedding anniversary this year with a trip to Kananaskis. The Nordic spa was lovely, but ending a challenging hike with banh mi was also pretty great.

Growing up, my family frequented u-pick farms. I am so happy to continue this tradition with Ellie with a visit to Rosy Farms.

Closer to home, we also continued with our community garden plot. We planted sugar pie pumpkins for the first time and garnered a bumper crop of 8 gourds (though Emily reminds us that half of the pumpkins were stolen before we could harvest them – but thus is the trade-off of a community garden).

One of the best meals I had this year was from pop-up restaurant Vagabond by chefs Christine Sandford and Roger Letourneau. The food was outstanding, and I mourn that the fleeting nature of Vagabond means I cannot revisit that meal.

I also spent a lot of time in Chinatown, whether leading the occasional walking tour, organizing Chinatown Dining Week (my final event after seven years), highlighting some of the incredible entrepreneurs in the neighbourhood, or, well, eating.

It felt like a gargantuan task, but Linda and I finally updated our Edmonton Food Faves We Crave list, following up on on the inaugural list in 2022.

We also ended the year with many family gatherings over the holidays, with Felicia surprising us with a last-minute trip to Edmonton. It was so great having everyone together at Christmas for the first time in a few years. Several meals were had together, including a very tasty one at Otto.

Edmonton Food 2024 Year in Review

As I note in further detail below, longevity doesn’t guarantee that a restaurant can survive the kind of turmoil seen over the last five years. COVID-19 (and its long tail in the form of pandemic loans) wreaked havoc on restaurants’ bottom lines, and on dining habits, accelerating consumer reliance on third-party delivery apps. Consumers, in a period of economic downturn and instability, are eating out less frequently, and are being more selective with their dollars.

Some of the restaurants that were able to open or expand in 2024 serve up comfort food, like burgers – Fox Burger opened their third location in the Edmonton region, Woodshed Burgers their fourth, and Flat Boy Burgers found a full-time home with Shiddy’s Distilling. New pizzerias serving up their twist on a perennial favourite included California-inspired fn’za, Roman-style Va, and Chicago/New York/pizzettas at Lore (opened in December 2023). In a time where purse-strings are being tightened, it wouldn’t be surprising to me if diners are gravitating towards hearty dishes from known entities or familiar products, minimizing the risk of disappointment and wasted dollars.

Looking back at the conversations I had with chefs and restauranteurs this year, most of whom are taking risks – either with their concepts or the neighbourhoods they are trying to revitalize – one quote sticks out from Steve Brochu, whose sit-down restaurant PlayWright opened inside the Citadel Theatre in June.

“We need people to invest in new ideas,” Brochu said. “There are eight pasta restaurants between here and the Convention Centre. We have a problem. People love pasta, but there’s so much other food. It’s a very big step to change your menu and see what happens, and there were restaurants that pushed the envelope and had to move it back. We want PlayWright to have tasty food and to challenge people.”

The hope is that Edmonton continues to harbour interesting and diverse hospitality businesses. But it will take a conscious effort from diners to ensure they can endure and thrive.

Other notable items from 2024:

  • Daniel Costa had a banner year, opening Bar Henry in Ice District, and a trio of restaurants in the Citizen on Jasper (the rebranded Uccellino in Olia, café Va, and lobby bar Mimi).

  • Other notable openings were Scott Iserhoff’s follow-up to Pei Pei Chei Ow in Indigenous restaurant Bernadette’s, and Menya Mori, a success story from an upstart ramen enthusiast who was able to transition from kits to a brick and mortar shop in a few years.

  • As has been observed over the past number of years, independent cafes continue to gain traction in Edmonton, including The Colombian opening their fifth branch, and readying for their sixth in 2025. This year, however, it was great to see more distinct cafés open, offering their unique take on coffee, such as Korean-influenced Liberta Coffee Lab, Scandinavian-inspired Strom, and Mokha Coffee House, serving up Yemeni treats.

  • Similarly, Korean cuisine continues to see no bounds in Edmonton, with several independents expanding (Hanjan’s third location, Nara Katsu’s second), new concepts opening (Nabi, Sang, JMT, Sam’s on Whyte), and Korea-based chains setting up shop here (Makchang Dodook, BBQ Chicken).

  • It is also no surprise that international chains made waves in the news, with Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, Krispy Kreme all garnering attention for their long lines upon their entries to the Edmonton market.

  • The food scene has seen an explosion of focaccia this year, with focaccia sandwiches being the focal point at Tiramisu Bistro’s sister restaurant Lift Me Up, prominently on the menu at Va and Bar Oro, and a za’atar-crusted version permanently on the menu at Little Wolf.

  • There were a number of high-profile closures this year, including Biera’s award-winning restaurant in Ritchie after 7 years. Longevity wasn’t enough for several others either, including Dalla (originally Zenari’s, 40 years total), NongBu (9 years), Gravy (8 years), Northern Chicken (7 years). Some restaurants closed after the proprietors decided to retire or pare down their operations, including Take 5 (40 years), Chicken for Lunch (32 years), and GaYa (20 years).

  • Speaking to the fraught nature of the hospitality sector, two well-known owner-operator couples announced this year they were divesting their interests, with Darren Cheverie of Chartier and Amy Nachtigall of Sugared and Spiced stepping back from their businesses.

  • Still, there were some businesses that were able to celebrate notable birthdays, such as Red Star’s 20th, Duchess Bakery’s 15th, and District Café and Coffee Bureau’s 10th.

  • The storied 120+ year history of Edmonton’s Downtown Farmers’ Market came to a close in January after an ill-conceived relocation to the Quarters. The Downtown Business Association resurrected the idea of the market and brought it back to 104 Street this summer.

  • It was also a year for higher-end grocery stores offering more of an experience rather than a means to an end, with Lucky Supermarket’s third Edmonton location, Freson Bros.’ second Edmonton location, Tesoro (an Italian Bakery offshoot), and L’OCA’s flagship in Sherwood Park all opening this year.

  • For the first time, an Edmonton-based competitor made it past the initial episode of Top Chef Canada, with Shane Chartrand placing in the top 5 of season 11.

Food Notes for January 8, 2024

Chinatown Dining Week Returns with Record 24 Restaurants

Chinatown continues to grapple with negative perceptions of safety and security, and businesses are struggling. Chinatown Dining Week is back again to serve as a reminder to discover or revisit some of our city’s culinary gems. The event runs January 18-28, 2024, with businesses offering special $10 or $20 menus during that period.

This will be the largest event in our seven year history, with a record 24 businesses spanning both Chinatown North and South. We are also thrilled to welcome five new businesses to our event: Hing Lung BBQ House, Italian Bakery, RJ Tasty Bites, Van Loc, and Xu Hue.

The full menus are now up, and the deals are hard to beat. There are so many reasons to dine-in – hot pot is especially enticing in this cold snap, and I’m partial to a bowl of pho. Take-out options also abound: Kim Fat sold over one thousand pounds of their famous fried chicken skin last year, so that’s likely to be another popular dish, and combos from Namaste India and Syphay offer something spicy for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. Those looking for a sweet treat should look no further than Hong Kong Bakery, Macarons & Goodies, or to the OG bubble tea purveyor Tea Bar Cafe.

As an entirely volunteer-run event, it can be challenging to manage the logistics with so many partner businesses. But our team is so passionate about making sure more Edmontonians are aware of the places that make Chinatown unique, and we hope it shows.

Openings

  • Oceania Grill is a new seafood restaurant opened by the same folks behind Watari. It is located at #102, 6104 104 Street.
  • New all you can eat Japanese restaurant Tatsu Sushi opened at 10163 109 Street. Their grand opening is taking place on January 12.
  • Coffee shops abound in Downtown and Oliver – the newest, also a coffee roaster, is Roam Cafe, which opened on January 2 at 10130 112 Street.
  • Momma Tong, a farmers’ market vendor whose Vietnamese meal kit products I have very much enjoyed in the past, opened up a storefront location in Old Strathcona back in December. Find them at 9938 82 Avenue.
  • BBQ Chicken, a Korea-based chain has opened up its first standalone location in Edmonton at 17020 95 Avenue. Their full menu will be available at this branch.
  • Wild Rose Cakes, who teased the opening of a Downtown location, has now revealed the exact location – next to Jack’s Burger Shack on Jasper Avenue and 104 Street. It will open in the spring and is called Obj3cts, and will feature home goods, gifts, flowers, and a second floor lounge space.
  • It’s great to see that DRTY Ice Cream announced that they are opening up their own location this summer! I profiled DRTY back in 2021 and they’ve come so far since then.
  • It looks like a second location of Les Moulins La Fayette will be opening in Edmonton in the former Transcend Coffee location in Garneau.

Closures

  • Asymmetrical Brewing announced their closure, with December 31 having been their last day of operations: “While the entire economy has been hit with hard times, we have felt it the same way. Although we have been right on the cusp for the last few months, cash flow has a challenge. We have not been able to get caught up to being sustainable any more.”
  • Awn Kitchen closed the cafe side of their business on December 23. Owner Kaelin Whittaker shared more about her decision in a blog post.

Upcoming Events

Local News

  • Zocalo is temporarily closed for renovations due to a serious fire that damaged the greenhouse. Zocalo just commemorated their 20th anniversary in November.
  • Wine Bar on Whyte takes over Overflow Café Wednesday-Saturday from 4-9pm. It is located at 8135 102 Street.
  • On the flip side, Cask & Barrel debuted a new aspect of their business called Cask & Bean back in November – from 7am-3pm on Monday-Friday, they serve up Colombian coffee and fresh-baked pastries. It looks like it is temporarily closed for the moment.
  • Twyla wrote about what she expects to see in the local food scene in 2024, including more fermented products and creative locations for restaurants.
  • Congratulations to Van Loc owners William and Wilson at Van Loc for reaching their first birthday since taking over the business. To celebrate, Van Loc is offering buy one, get one free banh mi on January 11.
  • Radio Active took a tour of the new chocolate business Delavoye Chocolate Maker with owner Antoine Lavoie.
  • Linda rounds up 8 giant foods available in Edmonton, including a giant croissant from Ayco Cafe, a punchbowl of poutine from Leopold’s Tavern, and giant bowl of pho from XO Bistro.
  • Jacqueline Jacek of Jacek Chocolate Couture was interviewed by CBC about her growing business.
  • Nicole Bhar, Candyce Morris, and Paula Shyba, the trio behind Kind Ice Cream, were recognized as 2024 Edifiers by Edify Magazine.
  • Brad Smoliak has been mentoring Ukrainian newcomers at Ukraine’s Kitchen, a restaurant staffed by newcomers that opened last year.
  • Baba’s Own Kitchen, which sells perogies and cabbage rolls, has seen immense growth.

What I Ate

I had a short but restful time with the family over the holidays! It was also nice to take a break from the blog for a couple of weeks as final preparations for Chinatown Dining Week are underway.

  • I finally had the chance to try CQ Noodle over the break! Their chef meat pork noodle soup was delicious, but not for the faint of heart for spice lightweights like me. It was great to see how busy they were over the lunch rush.

  • Carrot cake from Rosewood have become part of Mack’s annual birthday tradition since they opened several years ago. This year, we also tried their banana parfaits for the first time, and I might legitimately have a new favourite Rosewood dessert.

  • You’d be hard pressed to keep me from pho, and before long, I had to satisfy my craving for bun bo hue with take-out from King Noodle.

  • Co Do Hue is a family favourite, so when we were nearby after running errands, we picked up some of their tasty vermicelli bowls for lunch. Their grilled chicken is something special, and their service is fantastic.

Mack and I were fortunate to have been invited to attend a farm to table dinner at The Old Red Barn in Leduc last week. Partnering with Alberta Pulse Growers, the four-course meal would incorporate various Alberta-grown pulses into each dish.

It was our first time out to the property, where they have been hosting dinners since 2017. Owners Matt and Melissa Schur refurbished the barn on Melissa’s parents’ dairy farm with the hope of bridging the gap between consumers and producers through farm to table dinners.

Given its relative proximity to Edmonton, I was surprised with how removed from the city I felt walking up the path towards the barn. It had rained earlier in the day, and the surroundings were verdant and lush, with grazing horses completing the picturesque scene.

We were welcomed with a choice of drink and I was happy to see both alcoholic and zero proof versions of Black Diamond Distillery cocktails as options. I was already a fan of their spiced cranberry, but the earl grey mule might be my new favourite. The drinks were served alongside a crostini topped with creamy lemon whipped ricotta and Alberta faba bean.

Mack and I were also happy to see Faiza Ramji of Field Notes, pouring samples of Don’t Call Me Sweet Pea, a spirit aptly made from distilled peas.

When all the guests had arrived, Matt rang the cow (dinner) bell and he and Melissa shared their story of how The Old Red Barn came to be, and what to expect. The dinner that night would take place in the hayloft of the barn. I appreciated the small details – the table had been beautifully set with vintage china and wildflower arrangements.

Wetaskiwin-based chef Jesse Chambers was busy in the kitchen preparing our meal. I’m always interested in seeing how pulses can be used – after reading Mark Bittman’s Food Matters in 2009, we took up his challenge of eating beans or lentils once a week, and have never looked back.

I’m a sucker for soup, but chef Chambers made magic happen with his Alberta red lentil and coconut milk version. Nicely balanced, the crispy duck chicharon was the perfect salty bite on top.

For the salad course, everyone was appreciative of the detail of serving the beets warmed. I could have done with more Alberta green lentils (it was a pulse dinner, after all), but no doubt the chef whet our appetites for the main course.

The Strohschein Farm bison short rib was delectably fork tender, and paired well with the creamy Alberta pinto bean and bacon cassoulet. This was my favourite plate of the night.

Dessert was a flourless chocolate Alberta chickpea brownie, made even more decadent with a ganache and dulce de leche. I always love seeing pulses incorporated into baked goods – every little bit helps!

During the dinner, we also heard from pulse farmer and chair of the Alberta Pulse Growers Commission Shane Strydhorst. He shared how technology has improved his farming operations.

At the conclusion of the dinner, Melissa invited guests to shop the farm store. She supports several small producers at the store (we picked up some Thundering Ground bison and Van Assen Farm flour), but it would have been a more seamless tie-in if some of the products that were used in the dinner were available too.

Overall, it was a very tasty evening spent with great company, and I would definitely recommend it to those looking for a unique dining experience. While some of their upcoming dinners are already sold out, The Old Red Barn has planned several more events until the end of September.

Culinary Highlights: 2022 Edition

No regularly scheduled Food Notes tonight – between launching Chinatown Dining Week and Emily’s birthday festivities, I’m giving myself the night off. But I did think it was a good opportunity to finally post my personal highlights from 2022. Thanks for reading!

In 2022, I dined indoors a whole lot more than in the previous two years, but even that meant eating in around a dozen times. My family still hasn’t resumed pre-pandemic habits, but in all honesty, I did not know how much joy I’d continue to find in having picnics outdoors, and with young children, embracing the sheer convenience of eating in our own space.

We also remained close to home for vacations, hitting up some familiar locales. Staycations will definitely be in our repertoire for years to come, even now after travel restrictions have eased. The pandemic has made us even more grateful for what we can access just a few hours from Edmonton.

But above all, 2022 will be remembered as the year our family became four. Things haven’t been the same since Elizabeth arrived in August, as Mack and I adjusted to having a newborn again, and Emily grew into her role as big sister. But we’re looking forward to new adventures as a family soon enough!

Mack and I had our first in-person date at a restaurant indoors in more than two years. We had been invited to try Hayloft, a new steakhouse that opened in 2022. Some dishes are just meant to be consumed hot at the table, and perfectly cooked steak is one such plate.

We also had a wonderful night out together at Fu’s Repair Shop, a funky and delicious hot spot. I loved the story behind the restaurant.

Otto was one of the restaurants represented on the #YEGFoodFaves list I worked on with Linda in the fall (I was furiously writing out my sections while Ellie napped unreliably as a two month old). Kasey Ramen’s amazing kits also make an appearance on the list – I’m so glad I discovered them in 2022.

I was also really proud of reaching our five-year milestone with Chinatown Dining Week. It’s never a given for any event, and even more special for an entirely volunteer-run initiative.

Jack’s Burger Shack, which opened up Downtown at the end of 2021, has become our go-to for take-out. I love their hangover burger, and Emily adores their cinnamon toast crunch milkshake.

We returned to Prairie Creek Inn for our annual retreat, with Emily now being old enough to remember it. Their breakfasts are always something to look forward to.

Edmonton Food 2022 Year in Review

The Edmonton food scene in 2022 was a year full of tension. While this blog is primarily about restaurants, it is impossible to ignore the ballooning disparity between those who can eat out and those who can eat at all. It was reported that Albertans have the highest rate of food insecurity in Canada, while food bank usage in the province more than doubled the national rate of increase.

On the restaurant front, several long-standing restaurants closed, some due to declining revenue, while other independent restaurants were able to embrace opportunities to expand. Blue Plate Diner, an 18 year veteran, shuttered over the summer, while The Nook, Pho Boy, and Ono Poke all closed after five or more years in business.

Despite the losses, it was a pleasant surprise that so many small restaurant groups were able to grow their footprint in our community, and offer more unique choices for diners all across the city. These included: El Corazon and Leopard in Glenora; Takam Market at MacEwan University; Hayloft and Woodshed Burgers in Cameron Heights; Seoul Fried Chicken, Northern Chicken, and Birdog on 104 Street Downtown; Pal’s in Old Strathcona; and additional locations for The Colombian and Remedy Cafe in Parkallen and the University of Alberta campus, respectively.

It’s also worth noting that Windermere in particular had a banner year in attracting hospitality brands. The chain-loving spirit in Edmonton was in full force with the openings of California Pizza Kitchen and PF Chang’s. But those splashy outposts were joined by independents Black Pearl, Hello Mochi, Flame & Barrel, and Japonais Bistro (to open in 2023).

As inflation continues to increase, the reality of operating food businesses will be even more challenging. But after talking to many restaurant owners over the year, my takeaway was their gratitude towards their loyal supporters in these times. I am hopeful that this theme will continue into 2023.

A few other notable items from 2022:

  • The provincial vaccine passports (aka Restrictions Exemption Program) ended up being short lived, ending February 8, 2022, after being instituted in September 2021.
  • Most pandemic-related pivots restaurants had made in the previous two years ended, such as in-house delivery from Filistix and Duchess.
  • Some restaurants, such as Northern Chicken and Chartier, were transparent about why they had to increase their food prices.
  • In April, it was announced that Giselle Courteau and Jake Pelltier were stepping away from Duchess Bake Shop.
  • The Lingnan reached the incredible milestone of 75 years in business.
  • In October, Tres Carnales had to manage a high profile health-inspection related closure of the restaurant. This month, they announced their permanent closure.
  • No less than six Calgary-based brands set up shop in Edmonton, including Flirty Bird, Deville Coffee, Jerusalem Shawarma, Home & Away, Blanco Cantina, and PACT Coffee.
  • Many new national and international chains also opened in Edmonton this year, such as Fuwa Fuwa, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, Vish, Mogouyan, Community Taps and Pizza, and El Furniture Warehouse.
  • Planned development in Strathearn led to the closure of community favourites Ralph’s Handi-Mart and Juniper.

Recap: MilkCrate’s Feast in the Field

The last food event I attended was in mid-March 2020. COVID-19 seemed ominous, but we knew so little about it at the time. Over the last 16 months, food events have been postponed, outright cancelled, shifted outdoors, or scaled down to accommodate members of a single household only. Since then, I haven’t attended any food events, and also haven’t yet felt comfortable dining indoors at a restaurant. Having embraced the beauty of eating al fresco in that time, I was thus enthralled to accept the invitation to MIlkCrate’s Feast in the Field event that occurred last weekend.

MilkCrate, in partnership with Taste Alberta, organized an outdoor dining event at Allam Farms, located near Fort Saskatchewan. The food highlighted locally-sourced pork, dairy products, pulses, and canola through a comfort-driven menu. We were told the event sold out almost immediately.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by Chef Steven Brochu and the sight of a whole pig roasting on a spit – the definite makings of a tasty evening.

Tables had been set up on the freshly shorn wheat field, though Allam Farms also grows pulses and hemp, among other crops. The beautiful skies contributed to the stunning backdrop, one that everyone would ultimately take advantage of for (what else?) Instagram-worthy photos.

I’ll also say that because I haven’t dined indoors in a significant period of time, it was particularly wonderful to be able to be within eyesight of the kitchen. We were able to see Chef Brochu and his team assemble everything just yards away.

The meal began with MilkCrate’s house sourdough, but everyone was holding out for the main event.

The platters did not disappoint. Laden with juicy fire-cooked whole hog, smoked lentils and biscuits, lentil cakes, roasted vegetables, and field greens dressed with a smoked Saskatoon berry and canola vinaigrette, there was more than enough food for everyone. MilkCrate’s house sauces were a great accompaniment to the meat and lentil cakes, but I was most impressed with the lentils and biscuits.

For dessert, continuing with the pig and family-style theme, we were provided with ice cream cookie troughs made up of house-made cookies, canola oil cake, and scoops of Yelo’d ice cream. It was the best kind of indulgence.

Mack and I were fortunate to dine with a table of familiar food companions – Linda, Sharman, Diane, and Carrie from Taste Alberta. It made the experience of dining out and with folks from outside our bubble a relaxing one.

Given its success, MilkCrate and Taste Alberta are open to replicating the event in the future. I do hope they are able to do so – more people should have the opportunity to enjoy Chef Brochu’s food in such settings, an escape from the city and a reminder of where our food comes from.

Food Notes for January 11, 2021

In-Person Dining Restriction Extended

Last week, the provincial government announced that the public health restrictions that had been introduced in mid-December would be extended until at least January 21, 2021. This includes restrictions on in-person dining.

Some restaurants are doing their best to maintain take-out during this period, but are finding it challenging. Chef Paul Shufelt of Workshop Eatery and Woodshed Burgers has had to lay off staff, and isn’t certain when, even after restrictions are lifted, whether he will re-open indoor dining again. He shared:

“I don’t know if it’s actually going to be the 21st of January that we can reopen or if it’s going to be mid February or later. Furthermore, I don’t know, just because of the province says it’s OK for us to open, will I feel safe for us to make that decision for the sake of our staff and for the sake of our customers.”

Other restaurants are choosing to close outright due to the length and unpredictable nature of the restrictions. DOSC and Sober Cat Cafe have decided to close as of January 11, “due to the financial burdens of the pandemic.” They hope to re-open for dine-in when it is safe to do so. Their ghost kitchen Burger Brawl will continue to operate for limited hours on Fridays and Saturdays.

  • Chinatown Dining Week starts later this week, and runs from January 14-24, 2021. I was interviewed on CBC Radioactive alongside Phong Luu of Kim Fat Market to help promote the event.
  • The Tomato is collecting nominations for their annual list of Top 100 Best Things to Eat in Edmonton. Submissions are accepted until January 31, 2021. The folks at Jack’s Burger Shack have a suggestion on the types of businesses to nominate – “Vote for a restaurant that opened in 2020. Vote for a restaurant owned by immigrants. Vote for a restaurant with no social media presence. Vote for the mom & pop’s.”
  • The most recent episode of Radioactive’s Best Dishes column focuses on the brisket donair and the nacho kit from The Next Act.
  • Local baker Larry Harris will be on the next season of CBC’s Great Canadian Baking Show. He is also continuing to offer loaves and baked goods through his microbakery, Bonne Vie.
  • Sugared and Spiced turned some bad politics into some tasty treats, and will be serving up Hawaiian-themed desserts for the month of January.
  • The Moth Cafe was included on this Eat North list of vegan restaurants.
  • The Ritchie Community League has launched a hyper-local monthly subscription service that supports businesses in the area.
  • The Muttart Conservatory (and Culina Cafe inside) has been delayed in re-opening after its modernization due to current public health restrictions.
  • Restaurant Yarrow celebrated their first birthday last week.
  • The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald is welcoming Executive Chef Jiju Paul to their team. He was most recently the Executive Chef at the Edmonton Expo Centre.
  • The staff at Kind Ice Cream are taking workshops on basic ASL to be more inclusive with the Deaf community.
  • The latest from MilkCrate Listens involved a conversation with Chef Andrew Fung of XIX Nineteen about maintaining positive mental health during the pandemic.

  • The Edmonton Downtown Farmers’ Market is the last year-round market to add curbside pick-up as an option.

What I Ate

  • We finally tried El Beso for the first time on Friday. Mack had the carnitas tacos while I chose the enchiladas. They definitely didn’t skimp on the meat, and their website made ordering pick-up a breeze. If dining restrictions lift, we hope to snag a seat one day on their great Beaver Hills patio in warmer climes.

Chinatown Dining Week Returns January 14-24, 2021

Chinatown Dining Week is back for a fourth time! This year, 9 participating restaurants will be offering $10 and $18 takeaway deals from January 14-24, 2021.

Our mission has not changed – Chinatown Dining Week was created in 2018 to help promote and raise awareness of culinary gems in a neighbourhood that is often overlooked and undervalued. However, amidst an economic downturn and an ongoing pandemic, our partner businesses could use even more support. Foot traffic is understandably down in the area, as consumers plan only targeted visits, and pre-pandemic, many businesses served food not ideally suited for take-out. These family-owned businesses have done their best to pivot, offering delivery or enhancing their social media presence, but many are still struggling.

This year, due to ever-changing public health restrictions, Chinatown Dining Week will offer take-out meals only. Menus are available here, and diners are encouraged to call ahead to order.

We’re excited to welcome back eight returning businesses, offering a range of cuisines including Indian, Indonesian, Szechwan, Thai and Vietnamese, along with bubble tea, baked goods, and pastries. We are also thrilled that Kim Fat Market is joining us for the first time. Some may be aware of Kim Fat as a Chinatown grocer and butcher, but a well-kept secret is that they also offer prepared meals, too.

Epicureous in Edmonton: 2020 Year In Review

The pandemic wreaked havoc on life as we knew it. As Alberta exceeds 1,000 lives lost to COVID-19 amidst a holiday season under near-lockdown, it feels somewhat trivial to reflect on the food and hospitality scene in Edmonton.

Still, there is no doubt that COVID-19 will have a lasting impact on how we dine out in the future, even post-pandemic. For businesses that are able to outlast the successive waves of the disease as we await mass immunization, some of the pivots fulfilled out of desperation may become permanent.

Restaurants such as Corso 32 and Tokiwa Ramen continued to produce meal kits even after indoor dining was permitted again in the summer; these specialty items will appeal to those more comfortable in their homes or as an entertaining fail safe even after the “new normal” returns.

It was no surprise that delivery services took off this year, with many people reducing non-essential trips outside the home. Although Skip the Dishes made concessions late in the year to temporarily decrease their commission fees, the 20-30% cut taken by third-party delivery apps has severely impacted the bottom line of many businesses. As a result, bakeries like Duchess, fast-casual restaurants like Filistix, HanJan, and Meat/The Next Act/Pip, and fine dining establishments like XIX Nineteen, chose to adopt in-house delivery (joining the ranks of pizza joints and Chinese restaurants). It isn’t an easy undertaking, but hopefully it can be more financially sustainable for them in the long run.

Some chefs, including MilkCrate’s Steven Brochu and Shaw Conference Centre’s Serge Belair have staked out a greater online presence in the form of personalized cooking tutorials or demonstration videos. Food Bike Tours rebranded to Chef Table Living, providing home cooks with chef-created recipe kits and instructional videos. This continues the trend (albeit virtually) of what chef table dinners started by further closing the gap between the diner and the chef.

One of the pandemic adaptations that has been most transformative to the consumer experience has been the upgrading of online ordering systems. Sugared and Spiced, Cartago, and Bon Ton Bakery were among those who debuted more seamless ways for customers to pre-order items for pick up, minimizing time spent in line and indoors. The convenience of pre-paying and access to visuals that aid in product selection will likely prove to be an essential and worthwhile investment.

Here are a few other items notable to me in 2020:

  • Curiously, the pandemic pivot that didn’t take to a greater extent was outdoor dining spaces and winter patios. Some, such as Little Brick and Rocky Mountain Ice House/Cask and Barrel have invested significantly in their outdoor spaces, but given all the talk in the fall about the need for winter patio extensions it doesn’t look like many have taken the City up on this. It would be interesting to know if this relates more to the City’s aversion to approving requests on certain types of streets.
  • Considering the pandemic, it was another banner year for the expansion of some local businesses: Workshop Eatery grew with two locations of Woodshed Burgers and three branches of The Greenhouse; Culina on the Lake opened in Hawrelak Park; RGE RD added The Butchery; the folks behind The Sugar Bowl opened up Eleanor & Laurent; Love Pizza added outposts in southwest Edmonton and in Spruce Grove; and Calle Mexico and HanJan extended to three locations each.
  • Independent cafes continue to pop up in all corners of the city, and perhaps none too soon, given the rate Starbucks and Second Cup have been closing shops. This year, we welcomed The Dapper Beaver, Amandine Cafe, Krew Cafe, Mood Cafe, Cafe Neo, Intent Coffee, La Bosco, Bistro 99, Belge Cafe, Ch, On the Edge, and additional locations of Square One and Remedy Cafe. Not to mention CoffeePass launched in November, which intends to help promote some of the same independent cafes.
  • Given the hardship the hospitality sector has experienced this year, the number of closures may not seem as high as expected. However, this may change in 2021, depending on the length of lockdown-like measures. Among the businesses we lost in 2020 were Al Centro, Barking Buffalo Cafe, Dauphine, Die Pie, Doan’s, Doppio Zero Pizza, Il Forno, London Local, Prairie Noodle Shop, Royale,  Veggie Garden, Wishbone, and ZINC.
  • Collaborations between local businesses continue, but this year, even more so to help other independents when possible. The #eatloveeatagain initiative in December was one example, while Yelo’d has leveraged their delivery service to help other brands. In a creative twist, MilkCrate and Why Not banded together for a friendly burger competition.
  • In June, Linda Hoang set off a social media firestorm for Yoshii Express, an Old Strathcona eatery that was struggling. The public response to her posts was unprecedented, with line-ups at the restaurant for a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, that level of support wasn’t sustained in the months following. This illustrates both the brilliant possibilities of social media but also its fickle, top-of-mind nature.
  • On a related note, advocacy for local restaurants formalized in the Edmonton Independent Hospitality Community, led by Cartago and Fleisch owner Katy Ingraham.
  • The Edmonton food media scene contracted again this year, with Liane Faulder departing the Journal for a second time. Graham Hicks, who wrote a regular food column for the Edmonton Sun, re-retired in June, amidst some controversy when two local food writers re-surfaced troubling previously published reviews.
  • The Province relaxed regulations on low-risk home-prepared foods in June, paving the way for many home-based “pandemic businesses”, such as Kryzy’s Kitchen and Bonne Vie Bakery. Time will tell if they can maintain and grow a foothold in the crowded market.
  • Similar to the appetite for food delivery, grocery delivery services exploded in the last year, with more than a dozen new options available in the Edmonton area. These include independents like Italian Centre Shop, Meuwly’s, Steve & Dan’s, and Effing Seafood, and big players like Sysco and Gordon Food Service offering direct-to-consumer options. Bountiful Farmers’ Market also became the first market to offer delivery.
