City Market Report: Week 20

After a few weekends of dreary weather, today’s throwback to summer was a real treat. It was the perfect day to visit the City Market, especially because there are only two market days left in the season!

The countdown begins

As usual, there were lots of puppies on the street. We ran into my coworker, who had brought Prince along for a stroll!

If you love hearty fall vegetables, now is your chance to stock up for winter!

Valerie wrote about La Fourchette, an artist that pounds old cutlery and stamps messages on them. I finally came across the booth today. Most of the old forks and spoons were garden markers, but Mack and I loved the tongue-in-cheek ones, like “spoon me” and “fork me”. They even do custom orders!

104 Street was a busy place today – it served as the launching grounds for the Edmonton International Film Festival’s 24/One Challenge today, and the 104 Street Action Committee announced their new logo and marketing name today – the 4th Street Promenade.

We also checked out Coup, a new clothing store in the Great West Saddlery Building (the space used to house a stationary store). It’s exciting to see the new businesses moving into the area, with several more before the end of the year (Daniel Costa’s new restaurant on Jasper Avenue in October, and Queen of Tarts in early November).

See you next week!

  1. I spent 1 1/2 hours at the farmer’s market while I was sick (yikes) because I wanted to get something for my sister because it was her birthday Sunday (as is with mine). I remembered that Karen’s cake in a cup was going to be there,I was looking the whole time I was there, and when I was about to leave, I found here tucked between two other vendors. The flavours were quite impressive;baklava, strawberry green tea, dulce de leche and banana. The ones my boyfriend and I had (baklava and banana) were kinda dry so I wasn’t too impressed and there wasn’t too much filling in mine. On the other hand, the ones I got for my sister and boyfriend (dulce and strawberry) were apparently very good.

  2. Why do I always miss you at the market? La Forchette is my new favourite place. I bought one fore every herb I grow – (ordered the ones I don’t have) and LOVE THEM. The sweet gals made me one saying “A Canadian Foodie” as a gift for my support (as I have suggested them to CC on Whyte and Wellington Gardens… they are the perfect fit for these shops… I love discovering local talent like this. And am waiting until the last day for the sugar pumpkins to buy… one of my fellow cyber friends has made pumpkin butter out of the sugar pumpkin, and I AM IN!

  3. Foodie McPoon – thanks for the note! I did see Karen’s Cake back, but of course, we ran out of cash. Good to know which flavours to look for though.

Valerie – aw, that’s nice of them! I think the utensils would make such great personalized party favours.

  4. Hi Foodie McPoon- I am so sorry you didn’t like the cupcake. I am embarassed that this happened. I always try to make quality products and I don’t even have an excuse for this one. = ) I will be at the market again this Saturday and the next. If you’re going to be there, I would like to offer you a refund or maybe different cupcakes? Thanks! = )
